The History of London Sound Academy

LSA was founded by Buster Bennett in 2009, initially under the name 808 DJ Academy, and later rebranded to London Sound Academy in 2015.

Buster was a notable DJ and club promoter in London during the early 2000s, heavily involved in the electroclash, electro and new rave scenes. His club nights, Anti Social, Calling All Tribes, Nuke Them All, and Shabba Dabba Da, were all influential parties during the decade. They often attracted the eye of international press, including Paper Magazine, NYC, i-D Magazine and Time Out. During that time, Buster was also a journalist working with zeitgeist music magazines SuperSuper and Disorder. As a DJ, he toured the world with his distinctive mash-up style of bass and rave, supporting the likes of M.I.A, Diplo and Charlie XCX in their formative performances.

In 2008, Buster began teaching privately and later in 2009 established 808 DJ Academy, which offered DJ lessons at The Ghetto on Old Street. Later, the studio would move to Egg in Kings Cross. The academy was rebranded to London Sound Academy in 2015 with the launch of a new studio in Camden Market. Growing in size, the academy began offering both DJ courses and music production tuition, expanding with studios in Soho, Hoxton and Hackney. In 2019, the in-house record label LSA was launched, drawing support from many prominent figures in the industry.

After the pandemic, LSA closed its smaller studios to focus on a new, larger high-tech campus in Camden Town, which would house its expanded course offering. During this time, the faculty continued to grow and now comprises eighteen tutors of international merit. LSA is home to numerous DJ tutors who hold Global Talent Visas.

In 2023, London Sound Academy gained industry recognition and was awarded the coveted status of Official Pioneer DJ Education Partner. This accolade recognised LSA's contribution to the field of electronic music education. LSA also has long-standing industry relationships with the Ministry of Sound, Egg London, Louder, XOYO, elrow and many clubs and brands that help provide real-world experience for LSA alumni.

The year 2024 saw the launch of LSA’s monthly DJ networking event, which is now the busiest DJ social in London. The event attracts a spectrum of DJs, producers, event promoters and record label owners.

2025 was another fruitful year of growth for the academy. Kicking off the year, LSA partnered with Molinare, the UK’s leading post-production. Molinare's award-winning expertise is showcased in prestigious productions like the global phenomenon The Crown, the stylish thriller Killing Eve, and the breathtaking Frozen Planet II, with their work on these series contributing to an impressive haul of BAFTA, Emmy, and RTS awards.

In preparation for its 2026 expansion into higher education, London Sound Academy secured a major accreditation from the University of London in 2025. This endorsement affirms the institution's academic standards and programme quality and sets the stage for the launch of LSA’s first accredited courses.
